IIDMA- International Institute for Law and the Environment

Introduction

The increasing complexity of environmental concerns requires enhanced coordination and commitment from both public authorities and civil society at the international and domestic levels.

Law provides exceptional tools for environmental protection but to ensure its correct implementation and enforcement it is necessary to make a throughout follow-up. Otherwise, environmental degradation will not stop. The Instituto Internacional de Derecho y Medio Ambiente (IIDMA) was established to respond to that needs by a group of legal professionals.

IIDMA designs and launches its own projects as well as attends the requests from public and private institutions and organizations requiring support in the design and implementation of environmental protection mechanisms based on environmental law and policy tools.

The work of the Institute is developed at the international, regional and national scopes and offers its experience in international, EC, comparative and domestic law. IIDMA’s team is comprised of fully qualified lawyers graduated in Spanish as well as European and American Universities. It also counts with the support of associates qualified in social and natural sciences as well as in technological fields.

Goals

» Research, develop and implement international and European Community law as a means to protect the environment. The Institute fosters legal responses to current social and ecological needs, while promoting the participation of all sectors of society in decision-making and implementation processes.
» Promote cooperation to development in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development.
» Increase social awareness of environmental problems and facilitate the assumption of common but differentiated responsibilities to face these concerns.
» Respond to the legal challenges posed by scientific and technological development and by its impact on humans and the environment.

Funding

IIDMA receives its funds primarily from: grants from foundations; contributions from public institutions; income proceeding from some of the Institute's activities and legal advice; donations and assignments; membership fees.
